October is #TechMonth

Each month on the business blog we celebrate a new topic. For October we’ll be celebrating technology! To kick things off I figured I would share some of the tech that I’m most fascinated by right now.

  1. The folding electric bike
folded, red logo(1)More cars on the road means longer commutes. Telecommuting could help alleviate traffic congestion. Products like TDS Telecom’s business Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone solution, managedIP can help make telecommuting a reality for companies of all sizes.

Unfortunately for some employers and employees telecommuting just isn’t possible. But technology may still be able to help alleviate traffic congestion. Meet the GI Flybike. The collapsible electric bike was designed by Agustin Agustinoy and can travel up to 40 miles on a single charge. The bike can also connect to your phone via Bluetooth to track your trip and remind you where you parked.

  3. Water absorbing concrete
There is nothing worse than walking in the rain, stepping in a puddle, and being left with a soggy sock. Yuck! That’s why when I saw this video on Tech Insider from UK based Tarmac I got a little excited. Topmix Permeable concrete claims to be able to absorb around 880 gallons of water every minute! That’s 52,800 gallons of water ever hour! The technology could help put an end to flash floods and definitely soggy socks. Unfortunately, Tarmac claims the material won’t work in cold weather climates.

  5. Robotic lawn mowers
Each spring I get super excited about the impending warm weather, longer days, and the smell of fresh cut grass! By the middle of July that excitement turns to frustration. I’m mowing my lawn at least once and sometimes twice a week depending on the rain. Total, it takes about 45 minutes to an hour to cut the grass. That’s time I would much rather spend doing just about anything else. If only there was a better way?

Automatic (or maybe automagic as my friend and fellow blogger Kris Prusynski would say) lawn mowers have been on the market for a while now. You’ll have to forgive me for being a little late on these. Lawn care was of little concern to me until I became a homeowner a few years ago.

In most cases the devices are fully rechargeable and programmable. Using sensors placed in your lawn these little dynamos can keep yards of all sizes looking freshly mowed. The biggest down fall is the price. Most of the automatic mowers I saw were around $1,000.
