Spring is in the air. I don’t know about you, but when the weather starts getting warmer, I get a little pep in my step and seem to have another gear. With a renewed energy comes the opportunity to take care of some things you have been avoiding. That’s right, it’s time for spring cleaning, but this spring cleaning isn’t about washing some windows, it’s about being more productive.

Doing things the old way is comfortable. The old way is tried and true. The companion of the old way is clutter and keeping the old things that go with the old way. As societies way of doing things change, your ways should evolve as well. Here are a couple of things to clean up this spring to enhance your personal productivity.

Technology
I work with a lot of medical offices and going paperless has been a hot button issue in medical clinics over the past few years. The government is even paying these offices to stop using paper. I want a check for doing that. Despite all the incentives to go green, companies still don’t do it. Less paper means less clutter. Look for ways to go electronic in your business. It could be using direct deposit or electronic time cards.

Is your equipment as efficient as it could be? It may be time to overhaul some of your old equipment as well and replace it with faster, more efficient, tools.

Clutter
Take a look around your office. Are there piles of things lying around that have been in that state for a long time? If so, it’s time to take care of the piles. Clutter isn’t just a cosmetic issues, it’s an issue that can rob you of your ability to be productive. Piles represent incompletions in your life. When you have things lingering that aren’t “done” you start to focus on those things and you lack the ability to be present. If your desk has piles of work on it that you haven’t gotten to yet, it’s challenging to do other work as your focus wanders to the piles that represent past failures.

Take a specific time to go through these things and honestly assess whether they are worth keeping or not. If organization isn’t your thing, include someone in the process who is good at it. Doing this creates a space where you can be productive and free of distractions.

It’s easy to keep doing things the same way we have always done them. This spring, resist the urge to be complacent and look for ways to give your business a shot in the arm.
