Four things you can do to honor MLK Jr.

As we honor the life and message of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., it might be easy to overlook this as another historical day that comes and goes each year. But as our society is becoming increasingly polarized, his message is as poignant as ever.

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny,” said Dr. King. Patrick Yates, manager of Diversity & Inclusion at TDS, expanded on this thought saying, “We must have more examples of justice to overcome both physical and verbal injustices that are so prevalent.  Everyone must be involved and not let the pebble in our shoe prevent us from journeying over the mountain.  We are all better together!”

To celebrate and honor Dr. King’s life and legacy, consider taking action! Here are four things you can do:

1.  Talk about Dr. King at dinner. Speak with your family and friends about Dr. King’s message. Discuss what resonates with you and why?

2.  Read his speech aloud or watch it on YouTube. If you have young children, read an abbreviated version of it.

3. Volunteer. Consider volunteering for an organization that enriches diversity in your area. Sign up to help this week or this month.

4.  Support Diversity and Inclusion in your workplace. The video below explains exactly why this is so worthwile. Many companies are starting to invest in these initiatives on behalf of their employees. You might also take advantage of professional development trainings in your area!
