5 Easy Tips to Help your Business Prepare for the Zombie Apocalypse

zombieI’m a big fan of contingency plans. When I’m flying, for example, I always make sure to count the rows from my seat to an exit. Why, you ask? Well, just in case there’s an emergency and the lights are out or there’s too much smoke, I know I’ll be able to feel my way to the exit.

Likewise, I have detailed evacuation plans in case of emergency (i.e. disgruntled employee) at the office and in case of wild animal invasion in my house (don’t ask). I haven’t yet veered into prepper territory yet, but I’d be lying if I claimed that my extended family doesn’t have a plan for what to do if things really head south.

The great thing about contingency plans is that they’re a useful exercise to go through even if the emergency never happens. You’ll find weak links, improve processes and communications and sail through small problems because you’re prepared for those bigger problems.

I think we can all agree that the biggest emergency your business could face is the impending zombie apocalypse. If you can figure out how to survive in the wake of the undead, a natural disaster or public relations gaffe should be no problem, right? Here are five easy tips to help you prepare:

1. Find your weak link. Think about the business problem or process that keeps you up at night and start working now on how to solve it.

2. Protect your data. Good luck to the zombie horde trying to break into a tier 4 data center.

3. Don’t put it past those pesky zombies to infect computers in addition to their human victims. Be sure to have up-to-date anti-virus protection and firewalls. Security is a must!

4. Rely on your team. The lone wolf dies, but the pack survives. Don’t try to do it all yourself, take advantage of the different skill sets of your entire team to fight back against the zombies (or you know, your competition).

5. Be mobile. You never know when or where zombies will strike, so make sure you can do business anywhere, whether it’s in your office or hiding out in your underground shelter.

Just remember, whether you’re dealing with a post-apocalyptic wasteland or just another Monday, it always pays to be prepared.
