Career entrepreneurship

Career entrepreneurship is the concept of managing a career like a business. This may sound dry or too corporate but this strategy applies to almost every career path. Here’s my take on it.

A business owner needs to be conscious of who their audience is and what the demand is for their commodity, product or service. Being able to satisfy that demand and reach into new markets is how organizations generate revenue and pay the bills. Pretty basic. But how can you do the same with your career?

  1. Differentiation
With so many choices, why would a person choose Starbucks over Peet’s or Caffe Umbria? Each has a different approach to the same business with variations in theme, product quality, or core values. You, as a job seeker are the same. There may be similar applicants, with similar training but, who you are is what makes you unique. It’s important to know what you bring to the table. That’s what stands out on an application or during an interview. Use this to your advantage, discover why you’re different and what personal traits you have others don’t.
  2. Growth
Life is change and as long as we’re alive, we can grow. So what do you want to do once you land this position? Is another degree or certificate necessary? Perhaps a promotion is the goal? Whatever it may be, it’s important to have an idea about what’s next. Otherwise you’ll lose momentum.

Have you ever wanted to make a change but you didn’t know how (been there myself)? To move forward you should have an idea of what possibilities are ahead. If you don’t know, then ask someone in that field or talk to someone in a career center or job development agency. Rely on your network to keep you energized. Sometimes, we need people’s help and talking about these possibilities can give you that needed spark.

  3. Marketing
We’re aware of products because of commercials, magazine ads and billboards. You can do the same for yourself with social media including blogs, Twitter, Facebook, or Google+. If you craft your message tactfully and tastefully you can gain a following of like minded people. Utilize these outlets, which you likely already spend time on, to help portray what you want. If you go this route I’d suggest doing some research on personal branding.

These are just a few things you can do to help manage your career. Don’t let someone else decide what’s best for you. Take control and give yourself a fighting chance in this tight economy. It’s your life and your path, make what you can out of it!
