If it’s meant to be, it’s up to me

A key characteristic that all leaders share is that they take personal responsibility for their results. Have you ever had your car break down, lose your job, ruin a relationship, have hard financial times or been frustrated with your results?

I could go on and on but we all have setbacks and road blocks in our life. The difference between a leader and the average person is that too often an average person sits in the past, decides to have a pity party, and tells the world that where they are in life is just because of their circumstances.

The leader, on the other hand, may have the exact same setbacks and road blocks, but they decide to see those obstacles as something that they caused and that they are personally responsible for. Now obviously, you can’t control your car breaking down, a death in the family, maybe your company downsizing, etc, but leaders accept things the way they are, make a decision to focus on the now, do something about their situation, and take actions to make things better and design the life they want.

If you begin to see the world as an opportunity for growth, you can transform your obstacles into valuable lessons and will be much less stressed about the negative things that can, and will, happen to you. Use hard times to develop your mental toughness and show you possible weaknesses you have in your character. If you ask yourself, “What can I learn?” from a specific situation, you can separate yourself from the average and become one of the top leaders in your company and your life.

Have an attitude of if it’s meant to be, it’s up to me. The more you can focus on you being the one that should step up and lead and that you are responsible for making things happen, the faster your team and business can grow. Leaders have the mantra of “I am responsible” constantly going through their heads. If you don’t like your current situation in life it is up to you to change it. The crazy thing is, is that many people who are successful today have faced much worse situations ever will, or even have the exact same limitations and inadequacies that you have, but they have become massively successful in spite of those limitations. Take inspiration from their results. Like them, decide to take personal responsibility for your results. Take action and get from where you are now to who you want to be in the future.

Learn from the successful people around you. Get inspired by their stories and let them show you, step by step, how to get what you want from your life. Find a mentor. Step up and take personal responsibility for your results and you’ll begin to become the leader you were meant to be.
