Last minute Father’s Day gift guide

06-14-13 Last minute Father's Day Gift IdeasWe are less than two days away from father’s day! Have you gotten your dear old dad a gift yet? If you haven’t don’t fret I’m here to help.

Through extensive scientific analysis (google) I have determined that dads basically fall into five different categories. Below you’ll find a last minute gift guide for each. I threw in one bonus gift that’s sure to please all dads no matter what category they fall under.

    5. The tech dad
Our first idea comes from our residential blog. Missy Kellor, my colleague and all around awesome person, wrote about 10 gift ideas for the geeky dad earlier this week. Star Wars Lego Destroyer

On her list she included a Lego Super Star Destroyer. It’s a little on the pricey side at about $400. Express shipping will run you another $40 and it only gets it to your father’s door in 1-2 days. So if you want to go this route order right now. Of course you can always go to the Lego store in your area and buy in person. Your local toy store may also have a few destroyers on hand.

    4. The hipster dad
Hipster BikeI don’t know if anything is more hipster than a bike right now. Odds are your dad hasn’t had a chance to take his bicycle out for a spin in sometime. So he may need a newish bike. Nothing says hipster like something that’s used!

DreamBikes is a non-profit 501(c)(3) that places bicycle stores in underprivileged neighborhoods and then staffs the stores with local teens.

Donated bikes are serviced by the teens and sold. Donations are accepted at DreamBike stores, one of their remote locations, or during bike drives like this one that TDS hosted in May.

Prices vary depending on the type of bike you’re looking for. DreamBikes is only in Madison and Milwaukee, Wis. But I’m sure there are similar organizations in your area. If there isn’t you may want to check out your local Goodwill or thrift shop.

    3. The bookworm dad
If your father always has his nose in a book you may want to consider Dan Brown’s latest, Inferno. Dan Brown is the author of The Da Vinci Code, Angels & Demons, The Lost Symbol, Deception Point (my favorite Dan Brown book), and Digital Fortress.

His latest book, Inferno, which was released just last month, has gotten good reviews. According to the Boston Globe it’s “the kind of satisfying escapist read that summers were made for.” The book is available on Amazon right now for digital download. It’s only $12.99. Of course you can have a hard copy delivered or go to your local book store.

    2. The grill master dad
Weber Original Burger PressWhen it comes to grilling there is only one brand I trust —Weber. Last year for my birthday I got a Weber grill and my life has not been the same since! However, any grill master will tell you trying to make the perfect hamburger patty can be tricky. You can help dad out by getting him the Weber Original Burger Press for only $10.99. If you Google the Weber Original Burger Press you’ll find several retailers that are selling them.

    1. The preppy dad
The preppy dad can never have enough ties. In a former life I was a TV news anchor. file1781342551754Every year my daughter bought me a tie for Father’s Day and each of them was an appreciated addition to my wardrobe that was going stale.

I’m not going to tell you where to get one. Almost every department store on the planet has a men’ssection that will offer up at least a few.

If you are going to get him a tie make sure you get him the right one. Did you know ties are nation specific? Striped ties that point toward the left shoulder are considered European while striped ties that point to the right shoulder are considered American. U.S.A! U.S.A!

All dads
If your budget is tight and you’re strapped for cash don’t go out and charge a gift for him (dads appreciate financial responsibility). Instead share this list with a sibling or family member and see if any of the items seems like a good idea to them. Then spend some time with your dad putting together that Lego Super Star Destroyer, making hamburger patties or riding his newish bike. He’ll appreciate the time. I guarantee it.
