I am sure you have heard by now that as of April 8, 2014 support for Windows XP has ended. Simply put, Microsoft will no longer issue security updates and offer technical support for this product.

What does this mean to you – the small business owner? It means if you are still running Windows XP, your computer systems will not be protected from viruses, spyware, malware and other malicious programs that can get onto your computer system and steal your information.

Now that support for Windows XP has ended, small businesses are wondering how to make the transition from this product to a new operating system. In this article, I will be sharing 5 Tips that you can use.

5 tips for surviving the transition to a new Operating System

Backup all of your data to an external hard drive or Network Attached Storage Device
Before making the transition from Windows XP to a new Operating System, you will definitely want to backup all of your important files and information. I highly recommend using an external hard drive—which is perfect for solopreneurs. If you have more than one employee, a Network Attached Storage Device would be a great solution.

Check your pc hardware to see if it is compatible with Windows 7 or Windows 8.1
If your hardware is compatible proceed with choosing your new operating system. If your hardware is not compatible, conduct research via the web to look for affordable hardware replacements – or consult with an electronics store or tech support company in your area.

Choose your new operating system
Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 are two of the most popular operating systems in the Microsoft family right now. Read the reviews and features on both of these operating systems, then purchase the software.

Install your new Operating System
When you install your new Operating System, it is best to do a clean installation. If you are not technical, contact an Electronics store or tech support company in your area to get a quote on your software installation.

If all else fails, purchase a computer or computer systems that already has Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 installed.
